  • Tis = carcinoma in situ; T1 = lamina propria or submucosa; T1a = inner layer (mucosa) or thin muscle layer of the esophageal wall; T1b = supportive tissue (submucosa); T2 = muscularis propria; T3 = adventitia; T4 = adjacent structures; T4a = pleura, pericardium, azygos vein, diaphragm, or peritoneum; T4b = other adjacent structures (eg, aorta, vertebral body, airway).
